MARCIA DEAN - JEWELRY ARTIST
With a BA from Simmons College and a background in teaching and social services, I owe my career as a craft artist to a flat tire. At the auto repair shop, another customer invited me to join his jewelry making class. Soon after learning the basics of metal-smithing, I began to fabricate original designs into earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings. I create them all in my airy third floor studio space.
To create an intricate pattern, I scribe the design onto a flat piece of silver or gold using a brass template I created from my original drawing. I drill holes where the design calls for an open space and precisely hand cut the desired shapes with a jeweler's saw, then texture and finish each piece.
